DESCRIPTION:Every January 6th\, the Maroons of Accompong gather in a day o
 f remembrance and celebration\, on one of their hero's birthday. Accompong
  is nestled in the Cockpit mountains and is one of five Maroon towns scrat
 tered through the hills of Jamaica.\nCudjoe was one of the leader of the M
 aroons. His strategic warfare and the impenetrable mountains helped the Ma
 roons defeat the British. This lead to the signing of a treaty in 1739. Ma
 roons still do not pay taxes and are autonomous in some ways. \nThe Accomp
 ong Maroon Festival combines the feel of old African traditions and old sl
 ave rituals with perhaps the remnants of a long lost Arawak past\, making 
 it a day to remember.
