Players — Engineers, Producers and Selectors

At The Controls : Engineer Kirk Edge

It's always easy to forget the talent working at the controls. After all, he barely even makes a sound, he just works the boards. But without him the recording session might just go bust.

Engineer Kirk Edge can rest easy now. But the truth is that after leaving school, options seemed limited. With the utilization of his father’s many musical contacts, he literally pried his way into the music scope. When he met the famed King Jammy's, he decided to make ample use of the link. A few personal endorsements and subtle pleas later, Jammy's instructed him to show up by the studio on Saturdays. Not one to miss an opportunity, Edge quickly turned every Saturday into every day. He scooped up all and everything about engineering he could from the elder.

10 years later, he has tuned and tweaked the controls for just about everybody on the circuit. From local to international; from Bounty to Alpha Blondie. As it is in all cases, there will always be a few works that stand out among the cadre of production credits. Right away, he says Sizzla's "Liberate Yourself” album (Kariang Productions, 2000) comes to mind. Recent works have been done with the likes of Jah cure and Jah mason. Still edge is not about to localize the talent. He toggles between the regions of Europe, England, Guadeloupe and Jordan on any given month or any given year, all in the name of music.

As for family, edge is the 2nd of 3 youths. As for continuity, he is father of three ... so far. As for the wider family, the sound coming from the 30 year old studio mastermind is to "stay positive, a di only way we ago survive."
